Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year 2013!!!  New Year's in Germany can only be described as completely insane.  It involves the evening spent with friends (alcohol is usually involved) and then at midnight, everyone goes outside to set off highly explosive and dangerous fireworks.  The kind that are illegal to purchase in the U.S.   No children's sparklers over here folks!  It is truly an experience not to be missed and one that left me relieved that everyone in the family managed to escape unharmed... and we didn't even set off any fireworks!  It's just as dangerous to watch your drunk neighbors set off their own fireworks.  You can especially see what I mean in the videos at the bottom of the blog.

Mega sparkler attached to a tree.  Stand back!!  And this was the warm-up.

Leena and Sophie enjoy the fireworks... NOT!  They never stepped outside the front door!

All the kids having fun watching the fireworks.  You can see that the air is very smoky.  And yes, Leena and Sophie still have their ears plugged!

Our neighbors who went spent the evening with....  Thomas and Nathalie.

Here are a few short video clips that I took.  Keep in mind that we live on a small side street in the back of our neighborhood.  Can you imagine what things were like in downtown Heidelberg??  Almost every German sets off fireworks in the street on New Year's Eve.  Crazy stuff I tell ya!!
